9-Year-Old Dies After Being Pulled From Lake Michigan: Police

Two girls, ages 14 and 9, were seen struggling in the water at Gary's Marquette Beach, but only one survived, police said.

GARY, IN — A 9-year-old has died after she was pulled Tuesday from Lake Michigan in Gary, according to police.

About 2:30 p.m., a person saw two girls, 14 and 9, struggling in the water in an unguarded portion of Marquette Beach, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement. Beachgoers pulled one of the girls from the water and a Lake County sheriff’s helicopter found the other child and directed emergency personnel to her location, police said.

Both girls were rushed to Methodist Hospital, where the 14-year-old was treated and released but the 9-year-old was pronounced dead, according to police.
