Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Gary so special.

Gary is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or youβre just an occasional visitor, you know that Gary has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- In 1967, the city of Gary elected its first African American mayor, Richard G. Hatcher. Hatcher's election marked a significant milestone in the civil rights movement and inspired political change across the country.
- The Jackson 5, the famous Motown group led by Michael Jackson, hailed from Gary. The group performed their first public show at a local school talent show, and the rest is history.
- The Gary South Shore Railcats, a minor league baseball team, play at the U.S. Steel Yard. The team and stadium partner with several community spots, including the Northwest Indiana Library System, to offer free or discounted tickets.
- The Indiana Dunes National Park, a beautiful and expansive beachfront park, is just a short drive from Gary. Visitors can take in the great outdoors with hiking trails, camping and water activities.
- Gary is home to the Marquette Park Pavilion and Aquatorium, a stunning beachfront building designed by George Maher in 1922. Itβs a popular site for all types of events, from business meetings to grand weddings to intimate gatherings.
