📰 News we're reading

1. District 1 Received Nearly $2 Million in Road-Funding Grants (lakeshorepublicmedia.org) — Gary is set to receive nearly $1 million in state matching funds to repair local roads and bridges through Indiana’s Community Crossings program. The grant is part of almost $2 million coming into Senate District 1, with Lake County also receiving $1 million. Local leaders say the investment should improve transportation and make the region more attractive for residents and businesses.

2. Gary man gets 33-year split term in drug dealer slaying (chicagotribune.com) — A Gary man has been sentenced to a 33-year split term for his role in a deadly 2023 shooting on Delaware Street, where Gary Police found a 24-year-old East Chicago man fatally wounded. Prosecutors say the victim was lured to a Gary apartment for a drug deal before being shot multiple times, and a co-defendant now awaits his own sentencing.

3. Lake County Councilman wife's death ruled ‘undetermined': coroner (chicagotribune.com) — A Gary woman married to a Lake County councilman was found fatally shot in early September, and her cause of death has now been ruled “undetermined” while investigators continue their work. Indiana State Police have taken over the case from Gary Police to avoid conflicts of interest, and a special prosecutor has been requested as officials await further results.

4. Mom killed 6-year-old by holding him in cold shower on the day before his birthday (local12.com) — Residents should know that a 6-year-old North Chicago boy’s body was found burned and buried in Gary after his mother fatally abused him in 2021. She has now pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and faces a lengthy prison sentence, bringing some legal resolution to a case that directly touched Gary as the place where the child was discovered.

5. Hundreds rally against redistricting as Indiana senators return to Statehouse (wrtv.com) — A Lake County civil rights leader from near Gary joined hundreds at the Indiana Statehouse protesting proposed congressional redistricting that could dilute Democratic representation, especially in Marion County. Demonstrators argued the new maps would weaken voters’ voices for generations and urged senators to reject pressure from Washington as they prepare for a final vote this week.
