Gary Student Volunteers, Gardens & Won First Place In The Science Fair

Gary, IN — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Erica Pride who nominated Demitrus, a fifth-grade student from Gary, IN.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Demitrus has been volunteering in his community from a young age. He currently volunteers at a local Gary, Indiana garden. He helps plant and maintain the garden, as well as assists customers and visitors of the garden. Demitrus also is very helpful to others. Anywhere he goes, he offers his help in fixing things, doing yard work and troubleshooting technology issues.

Demitrus won 1st place in his science project this school year due to the creation and presentation of his project which focused on what he learned about gardening from volunteering. He also graduated from the DARE program this year which focused on keeping children away from drugs.

Lastly, he had participated in multiple STEM after programs over the past year and enjoys building and figuring things out. I am nominating Demitrus for his dedication, commitment and direct efforts in serving his community.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Demitrus has a kind and helping heart. He is willing to lend a helping hand to those in need as well as to serve his community.
