$175 Gold Coin, Silver Bar in Salvation Army Red Kettles Mean Time for Giving is Here

'Tis the season for giving, and generous donations were discovered when counting Red Kettles in Iowa City and in Ankeny.

Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign has brought a $175 gold coin in Iowa City and a silver bar worth $34 in Ankeny.

Here in Ames the kettles haven't collected anything out of the ordinary except for a few Canadian coins, said Capt. Corps Officer Robin L. Rutledge of the Salvation Army of Boone and Story County.

But the bell ringers have managed to collect about $48,000 or 40 percent of the Story County fundraising goal of $123,100.

The Red Kettle campaign includes the physical Red Kettles and a direct mail campaign. Funds raised go to the Salvation Army's local Christmas program, its rental and utility assistance fund, the food bank, and a prescription assistance program.

Rutledge said they are doing pretty well with bell ringers.
