Alleged Ames Home Burglar Said Lord Told Him To Do It

Ames Police Blotter Oct. 19 to Oct. 23

An 18-year-old Ames man, who allegedly broke into a home while the residents were sleeping told police that “he only did what the Lord instructed him to do,” according to complaints.

An Edwards Elementary School neighborhood resident alerted police to the "burglar" by calling Ames police early Tuesday and saying they saw a man walking up to houses with a big stick.

When Ames police arrived just before 2 a.m. Tuesday they heard the sound of breaking glass and went to the rear of a home in the 300 block of Westwood Drive and saw the shadow of a man in the basement, complaints said. They then heard a noise like rushing up the stairs and saw Corey Ramsey walking away from the home's front door, complaints said. He tried to run from police at first, complaints said.

The occupants of the home were in bed sleeping at the time of the break-in. Ramsey broke out three of the basement's windows and set DVDs outside one of them and also knocked over a concrete statue, causing about $200 to $500 of damage, complaints said.

Ramsey was charged with interference with official acts and second-degree burglary, a Class C felony. Class C felonies are punishably by up to 10 years in prison. Ramsey was taken to Story County Jail and released after posting a bond, according to court records.
