UPDATED: Ames And Nevada Battle Amcor Fire

Ames and Nevada firefighters spent Monday morning fighting a fireΒ at Amcor Rigid Plastics.

Scott Siberski, Ames Fire Department Shift Commander, said they were called to the scene just before 8 a.m. Monday for a fire in the wall of the plastic bottle manufacturer's second story.

Firefighters believed the fire was contained shortly afterward butΒ firefighters were removing metal panels to be sure, Siberski said.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion on the scene and resumed the fire fight. Damage estimates are not yet available.

Contractors had been welding in the area prior to the fire as part of a remodeling project, according to a release from the fire department.Β

"Firefighters encountered extreme difficulty reaching the fire, which was located in the insulation behind corrugated metal walls, requiring the use of hand tools to expose the fire," the release said.Β 

The plastic company received $210,000 in financial assistance and tax benefits in December 2012 for facility updates to keep jobs at theΒ Ames plant.

The company makes plastic packaging for beverages, food, spirits, personal and home care and pharmaceuticals industries and has 65 facilities in 12 countries, according to the Ames Economic Development Commission.
