Ames Police: Man Caught Urinating in Public Tried to Run from Police

A 23-year-old Ames man injured an officer when he resisted an arrest, reports said.

A 23-year-old Ames man was charged with interference with official acts, public intoxication and urination in public at 1:29 a.m. March 23 after police saw him stumbling near the intersection of Lincoln Way and Sheldon Avenue, according to criminal complaints.

The officer saw the man try to enter Dunkin' Donuts from the intersection and then go toward the back of the building, complaints said. Police followed and saw Zachary Byrnes urinating, complaints said. The officer tried to approach Byrnes but he ran. The officer was able to catch up but was “ultimately forced to taser him,” complaints said. The taser was not successful and Byrnes resisted through the arrest, complaints said. The officer received several cuts and scrapes as a result, according to complaints. Police said Byrnes smelled like an alcoholic beverage and had bloodshot watery eyes, complaints said.

March 25

Kyle Albers, 19, Stanton Ave., was charged with assault at 8:35 p.m.

Darnell Crawford, 19, Hayward Ave., was charged with forgery, contempt of court, possession of drug paraphernalia, prevent apprehension - all other offenses and drug possession/delivery at 6:50 a.m. Crawford gave his brother's name during an arrest earlier in the month, but Division of Criminal Investigation were able to verify his true identity through finger prints, according to complaints.
