Ames Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Federal Prison for Marijuana and Gun Charges

Colin Peter Thompson, 21, was sentenced on charges on May 17, according to the Department of Justice.

A 21-year-old Ames man will spend three months in federal prison for marijuana and gun charges, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Colin Peter Thompson was convicted of conspiring to distribute marijuana and disposing of a firearm to a drug user and for possessing a firearm as a drug user. He was sentenced to three months in prison and three years of supervised release on May 17.

Thompson gave money to a Clarence man in July 2012 in Iowa City to purchase marijuana and shared in the profits of the marijuana's sale, according to the release. Thompson used the money to purchase an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and gave the Clarence man the gun, according to the release.

The Clarence man, Lee Marvin Weekly, 21, was convicted of all the same charges and sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release, the Department of Justice said.
