Cyclones and Possible Tornadoes in Ames Saturday

Iowa Storm Chasers are preparing to watch for tornadoes as the weekend storm approaches.

Cyclones will be all around Ames on Saturday with an 11 a.m. Iowa State-Kansas State Football game scheduled at Jack Trice Stadium. Anyone at the game might also want to keep their eyes out for the kind of cyclones that drop from the sky.

Temperatures are expected to warm to 70 degrees, bringing thunderstorms and possibly tornadoes. A fall tornado is unusual, but not unheard of.

In November of 2005, a tornado swirled down directly west of the stadium before the kick off of the Iowa State-Colorado game, according to a report from Radio Iowa.

Nick Weig, of the Storm Chasing Network, told the Des Moines Register, that people should take the warnings seriously, though it may not feel as warm and humid before a spring storm.

“A lot of the ingredients that are in place in the spring are kind of reversed in the fall,” he said. “Things can get volatile. It doesn’t matter what the calendar says.”
