Speaker: Charles W. Larson, Jr., Former U.S. Ambassador to Latvia from January 7, 2008 to January 20, 2009.  He was appointed by President George W. Bush and sworn in by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Prior to his appointment, Charles served from 2003-2007 as an Iowa Senator and from 1993-2001, he was a member of the Iowa House.  He was Chairman of the Iowa Republican Party from 2001- 2005. 

As a major in the U.S. Army Reserves, Charles served for a year (2004-2005) in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat and the Combat Action Badge. While there, he spearheaded the collection and distribution of $100,000 School and medical supplies to the Iraqis. They also built 12 new schools and three water filtration sanitation systems providing clean water to the community for the first time.
