The 100 block of Welch Avenue was closed Friday as fire crews extinguished a small fire in a building next to Ames Fire Station 2.
Firefighters were called to the scene about 5 p.m. The fire appeared to come from the third story of 126 Welch Ave.
Heather White, who lives above Paddy's Pub with her husband and two children, said they heard a smoke detector go off. She walked down the hall and saw smoke from beyond the laundry room.
She came back and told her family to get out and knocked on neighbors' doors. White said she expected to be allowed back in the apartment after firefighters investigate the scene.
