Flash Flooding Washed Out Story County Roads in Hundreds of Places
Gravel roads in Story County were washed out in more than 300 places, engineer said.

A Presidential disaster declaration for recent flooding in Story County could help the County engineer's office reopen washed out roads.Β
Gov. Terry Branstad added Story County to a disaster declaration May 31.Β
Flash flooding caused water to rush over Story County roads in 325 places, said Darren Moon, Story County Engineer. A bridge near Hickory Grove Park on 250th Street was also washed out.Β
The engineer's office has been working to reopen roads and will spend an estimated $230,000 to replace the gravel that washed away.Β
Assistance might be available if the county receives a presidential declaration, Moon said.Β
Moon said the county will have to fix the roads with or without assistance.Β
βWe have to. We don't have much of choice,β Moon said.Β
The bridge near Hickory Grover Park had been closed because of ice damage and a spring thaw damaged some of the piling, but the recent event washed the bridge out completely, Moon said.
