Hearing on Miller Ave. School Project Set for 6:30 p.m.

The Ames Community School District plans on Monday to approve a recommendation to enter into contracts with Woodruff Construction, Kruck Plumbing & Heating and DeVries Electric for the construction of a new elementary school on Miller Avenue.

The above companies were the low bidders when alternates were selected and calculated. The total dollar amount is $9.626 million. That's $1.5 million under the project's construction budget said Ames School Board Superintendent Tim Taylor.

A public hearing on the bids and construction plans for the new school will be held at the beginning of the board meeting which starts at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Ames High School 1921 Ames High Drive.

The district has worked with Woodruff Construction in the past on a project at Ames High School. The district and companies involved including CPMI struggled to work together and a state audit of payments was conducted.

This time CPMI is not involved.

Ames Superintendent Tim Taylor told the Ames Tribune that he had asked an attorney if the district could reject the lowest bidder (Woodruff) due to problems they had during the last project, but hadn't received a response.

Another thing that may concern community members is that Woodruff Construction's CEO has been charged twice in area prostitution stings.
