Huxley Mother Accused of Killing Newborn Twins Pleads Guilty; Sentenced to 50 Years

Jackie Burkle was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after the bodies of her newborn twin girls were found in the trunk of her car in January.

A mother from Huxley was sentenced to two concurrent 50 year prison sentences after pleading guilty in the deaths of her newborn twin daughters, today in a Story County courtroom.

The , 22, appeared pregnant on one work day and no longer seemed to be so, about two days later. Burkle had denied being pregnant. Suspicious co-workers at Casey's General Store in Huxley notified police, which lead to an investigation.

The twin babies were found dead, and police say Burkle admitted to causing their deaths.

The Ames Tribune, citing Burkle's attorney Maria Ruhtenberg, reported that Burkle pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder this morning at the Story County Courthouse. Burkle will serve at least 35 years in prison before she is eligible for parole, the Tribune also reported.

An order to accept a plea agreement was filed today, and it stated there would be an immediate sentencing, according to online court records.
