A 29-year-old man could spend five years in prison, if found guilty of racing away from an Ames police officer while riding a motorcycle through Ames on May 14.
Chad Lee Chelsvig, of Story City, was charged with felony eluding, contempt, excessive speed and failure to obey a traffic control device Friday. He was arrested on a warrant.
According to criminal complaints, an Ames police officer tried to stop Chelsvig, who was riding a motorcycle in the 1900 block of Lincoln Way about 8 a.m. May 14, because he reportedly violated a no contact order.
Chelsvig looked over his shoulder at the police officer and accelerated away at a speed of more than 70 miles per hour, complaints said. During the pursuit Chelsvig drove through a red light almost causing an accident and sped away at an estimated speed of 100 miles per hour, complaints said.
Police stopped the pursuit because of Chelsvig's excessive speed, complaints said.
Felony eluding, is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
