May Flowers in the Snow (Photo)

Ames didn't see as much snow as other areas of the state that had record breaking snowfall.

Ames received its share of snow from a rare May winter storm Thursday and Friday, but saw far less than other areas of the state.

The National Weather Service reported that Ames received about 5.3 inches as reported by a National Weather Service employee who lives in Ames.

Reuters reported that the snowfall broke a 66-year-old record in three cities for the heaviest snowfall in May.

"Britt and Forest City both reported a snow depth of 11 inches and Algona reported 10.5 inches. The previous record of 10 inches was on May 28, 1947, in Le Mars, Iowa."
