MLK 2013 Events in Ames

The entire community of Ames will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King through the end of the month. Some events take place this week.

The Volunteer Center of Story County, City of Ames, Iowa State University and faith community have a number of events planned for Martin Luther King Day this year.

Most will take place Jan. 21 but St. John's by the Campus in Ames has asked the Ames Interfaith Dialogue to join with them from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 20 in a celebration and dialog at Saint John's, 2338 Lincoln Way.

A 30 minute service highlighting the life of Rev. King will be held followed by small group discussion in the parish hall on a variety of King's sayings on nonviolence.

And before that Iowa State University will hold a Let Freedom Ring- Carillon Concert at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday on Central Campus. The event is free and part of the Martin Luther King Jr., legacy series.

A community celebration will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Ames Middle School, 3915 Mortenson Road. The program includes speeches, songs and an awards ceremony.

A community food drive will also be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Collegiate United Methodist & Wesley Foundation Annex's auditorium at 130 Sheldon Ave.

ISU's 2013 MLK Legacy Series will continue with a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Convocation at 4 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.

Finally ISU will host Race, Racism and Race Relations in America - Michael Eric Dyson 8 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.
