Parasite Closes Furman Aquatic Center

Furman Aquatic Center has been closed after two cases of Crypto have been confirmed in the county. The parasite that causes the intestinal illness is commonly spread through drinking and recreational water.

Cryptosporidium, the parasite that causes intestinal illness, has led to the closure ofΒ Furman Aquatic Center, according to a release from the City of Ames.

Two cases of the illness, with symptoms such asΒ diarrhea, have beenΒ confirmedΒ in Story County so the aquatic center will close for aΒ hyper-chlorination process.Β 

The Furman Aquatic Center will be closed through Saturday morning. The City said to check the Furman Aquatic Center Facebook page for updates.

Here are tips from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention to avoid contamination as reported by the City of Ames.

At public swimming pools:

Β· Β  Β  Β  Β Protect others by not swimming if you are experiencing diarrhea (this is essential for children in diapers). If diagnosed with cryptosporidiosis, do not swim for at least 2 weeks after diarrhea stops.

Β· Β  Β  Β  Β Shower before entering the water.

Β· Β  Β  Β  Β Wash children thoroughly (especially their bottoms) with soap and water after they use the toilet or their diapers are changed and before they enter the water.

Β· Β  Β  Β  Β Take children on frequent bathroom breaks and check their diapers often.

Β· Β  Β  Β  Β Change diapers in the bathroom, not at the pool side.
