Public Wi-Fi Spots Shutdown Across Ames
Outdoor wi-fi locations have been shutdown in Ames due to poor usage.

The City of Ames began turning off select outdoor public wifi locations this week.
Hickory Shelter at Brookside Park, Campustown Plaza, Hunziker Youth Sports Complex and Tom Evans Plaza no longer have or will no longer offer free Wi-Fi.

People will still find free access at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena, Community Center, Municipal Pool at the Ames High School, City Hall and outdoor areas of the Furman Aquatic Center.
Stan Davis, City of Ames Technology Manager said the city began offering Wi-Fi hotspots in July of 2008 but the need for access wasn't as great as thought, because more and more people are using smart phones and other internet-enabled devices.

“It seems the internet is more commonly accessed today using smart phones with faster data plans,” Davis said according to a release from the city.
