Rep. Steve King, Christie Vilsack Set New Campaign Spending Record

Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron and Christie Vilsack spent at least $7 million in their race for the 4th District.

The race for Iowa's new 4th District between Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron; and Ames Democrat Christie Vilsack broke campaign spending records, as King predicted it would in Ames in April.

Both King and Vilsack spent a combined $7 million on the race, according to a report in the Mason City Globe Gazette.

In fact a third of the $18 million spent in Iowa congressional races was spent in the 4th District, according to the report.

King spent more than $3.7 million and Vilsack spent $3.3 million, but those totals are expected to increase when the final reports come in.

In 2006, Republican and Democrat candidates raised a combined $4.8 million in their race for the District 1 Congressional seat. At that time Democrat Bruce Braley was up against Republican Mike Whalen.
