Saturday's Severe Weather: Thunder, Hail, Tornadoes

The National Weather Service expects possible hazardous weather in Ames this weekend.

It might be below freezing right now, but it's going to warm up fast and that isn't exactly a good thing.

The National Weather Service's Hazardous Weather Outlook reports that scattered thunderstorms will begin this evening and some storms could become severe and include damaging winds and hail.

Saturday “all modes of severe weather are possible including damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes,” the forecast states.

The most severe storms will hit central Iowa towns south of U.S. Highway 20.

  • Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Southeast wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

  • Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1am. Low around 52. South southeast wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

  • Saturday: Showers and thunderstorms. High near 73. South southeast wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

  • Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1am. Low around 53. South wind 6 to 14 mph becoming west northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 65. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

  • Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 43.
