A 27-year-old Boone native and Iowa National Guardsman will challenge Congressman Steve King, R-Kiron for his 4th-District seat.

Jim Mowrer told CBS news onΒ Tuesday that he plans to run in the 4th District on the Democratic ticket in 2013.

Mowrer currently works at the Pentagon andΒ served in Iraq in 2005 and 2006.Β

Mowrer's unit theΒ 1-133 Infantry Battalion, served the longest deployment of any unit in the Iraq War – 23 months,Β according to a release from the campaign.

Today Mowrer is theΒ Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Army, the release said.

β€œWhen I served in Iraq, there were no Democrats or Republicans – just Americans working together to protect our safety and stability.Β Β But when I look at Congress, I don’t see that same approach,” Mowrer said in a prepared statement. β€œIn Congress, too many politicians are trying to score political points for partisan gain or pushing sound bytes to please their extreme base.Β Β I’ve decided to run for Congress to restore that true sense of public service –and to work together to find common sense solutions that will help middle class families like mine."
