Steve King Sees Challenge for Seat From Iraq War Veteran

A 27-year-old Boone native and Iowa National Guardsman will challenge Congressman Steve King, R-Kiron for his 4th-District seat.

Jim Mowrer told CBS news on Tuesday that he plans to run in the 4th District on the Democratic ticket in 2013.

Mowrer currently works at the Pentagon and served in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. 

Mowrer's unit the 1-133 Infantry Battalion, served the longest deployment of any unit in the Iraq War – 23 months, according to a release from the campaign.

Today Mowrer is the Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Army, the release said.

“When I served in Iraq, there were no Democrats or Republicans – just Americans working together to protect our safety and stability.  But when I look at Congress, I don’t see that same approach,” Mowrer said in a prepared statement. “In Congress, too many politicians are trying to score political points for partisan gain or pushing sound bytes to please their extreme base.  I’ve decided to run for Congress to restore that true sense of public service –and to work together to find common sense solutions that will help middle class families like mine."
