Winter Storm Q approached Ames in the late afternoon dropping an inch of snow before dusk, if that. Schools dismissed early anticipating treacherous travel conditions and roads around Des Moines were ice covered by 9 p.m., according to DOT reports. Snow was expected to stop by noon Friday.
