How Do I Know When a Snow Ordinance is in Effect in Ames?
Any time there is more than two inches of snow on main routes, the ordinance is in effect and you need to move your car from the snow route. Vehicles are often towed immediately. If you don't want to measure the snow, check the city's website or public access channel 12. Snow ordinance information will also be passed along to the ABC, CBS and NBC affiliates (Β KCCI (8), WHO (13) and WOI (5) ) and local radio stations, KASI - 1430 AM andΒ KCCQ - 105.1 FM. It should also be posted on Ames Patch.

Plows begin clearing main roads like 13th Street, Grand Avenue, Duff Avenue and Lincoln Way after two inches has accumulated. The goal is to have snow routes open by 7 a.m. or 5 p.m. depending on when the snow starts.

Designated snow routes and arterial streets are plowed before residential streets. Parking lots, sidewalks and bike paths follow. Alleys may be plowed the day after a snow fall.

How Long Do I Have to Shovel My Sidewalks?
The city ordinance says people should clear paths promptly. Snow must be removed within 10 daylight hours after a snowfall. If you don't clear it the city will do it an assess a fee. The average fee ranges from $90 to $150.
