Zach Wahls Talks About His Two Moms at Iowa State Tonight

Wahls has become a marriage equality advocate since a 2011 video of his plea for marriage equality went viral.

Zach Wahls, the Iowa City son of two lesbian mothers will speak about what he thinks makes a good family 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Memorial Union.

His “What Makes a Family?” lecture is among a number of appearances Wahls never expected to make.

Wahls' plea for equality when the Iowa House considered a same-sex marriage ban in January 2011 unintentionally led the Iowa City son of two lesbian mothers to become a leading advocate for marriage equality. A YouTube video of his testimony went viral thrusting him into the spotlight.

Since then he's written a book called “My Two Moms” and has appeared on a number of talk and news programs including "Ellen DeGeneres Show," "The Daily Show" "The Late Show with David Letterman" and more.

Wahls' lecture "What Makes a Family?" takes place 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Union Great Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Wahls says on his website that he's traveled the country talking about his “rather boring” experience.

He's currently involved in several lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender rights projects including an effort to end the Boy Scouts of America's ban on gays.
