Senior Community Coming Despite Objections

Ankeny City Council approved the development of a senior living community in northwest Ankeny despite objections from neighbors.

Some Ankeny residents are opposed to the placement of a new senior living facility in northwest Ankeny, according to a report in the Des Moines Register.

Marlene Kitsos, of Rockcrest Drive, said an 85-unit senior facility proposed on seven acres north of Northwest Fifth Street, between Northwest Irvindale and Northwest Weigel drives would be better placed near doctors offices and shopping districts.

“Stop doing cookie cutter projects like this,” Kitsos said during a recent meeting, according to the Register report.

Gratias Properties originally wanted to build an 108-unit facility, but scaled it back after hearing the concerns of neighbors. The Council unanimously approved the project this week.

Darci Borcherding, another resident, said there are too many townhouses on the market, which is what that parcel of land was originally slated for, according to the report.
