Cedar Falls and Iowa City Woman's Car Explodes into Flames on Highway 20

Cedar Falls Patch editor Alison Gowans's sister, Jamie Gowans, walked away from the explosion unharmed.

A car explosion on Highway 20 near Evansdale Wednesday destroyed a Cedar Falls and Iowa City woman's car, but she walked away unharmed.

Jamie Gowans, 24, was driving from Cedar Falls, her hometown, to Iowa City, where she currently lives, around 9 p.m. when her 1998 Toyota Camry began decelerating on the highway without warning.

Gowans said she began to pull over and noticed smoke in her rear window. She was able to get out of the car before it was engulfed in flames. The Evandsdale Fire Department responded to the fire, which sent billowing smoke over the highway.

Editor's note: Jamie Gowans is my sister. My family and I are very glad she is OK.
