Cedar Falls' New Public Safety Building Gets Approval

The $11 million project should be completed bu May 2019 and will assist the city's efforts in cross-training police and fire personnel.

CEDAR FALLS, IA — The city will spend $11 million to build and supply a new headquarters for police and fire services after the public safety building project received approval from the City Council this week. Construction is expected to be completed by May 2019.

The building itself will cost $7.4 million. The added costs are for the site purchase, design fees and equipment once the facility is completed. The city had earmarked money for the project in previous budgets and will not have to issue voter-required bonds for the project.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported the site now houses the south fire station. It reported that Public Safety Director Jeff Olson said combining police and fire operations at one site will assist with efforts to cross-train public safety officers to perform police duties and fight fires, as well as free up space in City Hall that police now occupy.
