Cedar Falls Weather: Winter Storm Triton to Bring Freezing Rain, More Snow, Hazardous Driving Conditions

Forecasters are predicting up to 9 inches of snow, freezing rain and strong winds.

Not so fast, those of us hoping spring was right around the corner.

Brace for another storm rolling through today, and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning. The storm is expected to bring up to 9 inches of snow, wind gusts of up to 40 mph, and hazardous driving conditions.

The storm is supposed to roll through between 4 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday, with rain switching to freezing rain switching to snow.

The storm has been named "Triton."

WINTER STORM AFFECTING MUCH OF IOWA TODAY AND TONIGHT... A WINTER STORM OVER MISSOURI IS ALREADY BEGINNING TO AFFECT THE REGION THIS MORNING. THE STORM WILL BRING MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY SNOWFALL TO PARTS OF CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST IOWA BY MONDAY MORNING. NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS WILL ALSO INCREASE THROUGH THE DAY AND TONIGHT...CAUSING HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO LOW VISIBILITY AND SNOW COVERED ROADS...ESPECIALLY LATER THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY MORNING.

LIGHT RAIN...POSSIBLY MIXED WITH LIGHT FREEZING RAIN AT TIMES...WILL SPREAD ACROSS THE AREA THIS MORNING BEFORE SWITCHING OVER TO ALL SNOW LATER THIS AFTERNOON. MODERATE TO LOCALLY HEAVY SNOW IS POSSIBLE FROM LATE AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT. THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF BY MONDAY MORNING.

STORM TOTAL SNOW/ICE ACCUMULATIONS...TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 5 TO 9 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS NORTHEAST CAN BE EXPECTED BY MONDAY MORNING. A LIGHT GLAZING IS ALSO POSSIBLE YET THIS MORNING NORTH OF HIGHWAY 30 AS THE PRECIPITATION TRANSITIONS TO SNOW.

WINDS/VISIBILITY...NORTHWEST TO NORTH WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO NEAR 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT...RESULTING IN BLOWING SNOW AND REDUCED VISIBILITY OF LESS THAN A HALF MILE AT TIMES. STRONG WINDS AND SOME BLOWING SNOW WILL REMAIN THROUGH NOON MONDAY.

IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY TO RAPIDLY DETERIORATE LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND BECOME VERY HAZARDOUS BY TONIGHT. ROADS MAY BECOME ICY AS INITIALLY THE SNOW MELTS AND REFREEZES. AS SNOW ACCUMULATES ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS.
