Iowa #*!*@* Nice: Iowans Are 'Goody Two Shoes' About Cursing But Could Say 'Please' and 'Thank You' More

We Iowans apparently watch our language, but we could stand to say "please" and "thank you" a bit more.

About now, you're probably saying, 'thanks for the free #*#@* advice!?!?'

According to an analysis the Marchex Institute, Iowans are among the least likely to curse on the phone. Iowa ranked in the bottom third of states in tendency to swear.

Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries.

Though Iowans don’t curse much, they also don’t say “please” and “thank you” enough, either. Iowa was ranked in the bottom third in a category called "not courteous" in the report.

The analysis by found that Washington, Massachusetts, Arizona, Texas and Virginia are least likely to curse on phone calls. Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Louisiana and Illinois topped the list for most foul-mouthed callers.

Iowa didn't get a specific rank, although a staffer at the institute said they may create a more detailed report given the interest.

Some other findings from the report:

  • 66% of curses come from men
  • The calls that contain the most cursing are more than 10 minutes long. So the longer someone is on the phone, the more likely that call is to devolve.
  • Calls in the morning are twice as likely to produce cursing as calls in the afternoon or evening.

What do you think about the findings? Do you find Iowans don’t curse much or say “thank you” enough? Let us know in the comment section, but keep it clean.
