Bitter Cold Winds Blowing Major Winter Storm to Iowa; How Much Snow Will Cedar Falls Get?

Wicked winds are blowing in a storm that later this week could dump close to a foot of snow on Cedar Falls.

A major winter storm expected midweek could pack a wallop in Cedar Falls and the rest of the state Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service isn’t leaving room for doubt, saying there’s a 100 percent chance of snow Thursday and Thursday night. On Friday, precipitation chances drop to 40 percent.

Black Hawk County is under a winter storm watch from Thursday morning until Friday morning. Accumulation of six to 10 inches of snow is expected, with higher amounts possible in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is likely to occur along and west of Interstate 35.

In addition to the snow, strong winds Thursday could restrict visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times.

Until then, it’ll be just plain miserable. The high Tuesday is 11 degrees, with windchill values as low as -15 degrees, thanks to wind gusts as high as 36 mph. Wednesday will be even worse, with a high near 19 degrees and wind chill values as low as -20.
