New Scheels Prepares to Open as College Square, Crossroads Stores Close Doors

The new location will employ more than 150 people and will offer a fudge shop with Starbucks coffee, a Big Buck Hunter simulator, a 'Photo-Op' Booth, and a 5-sport simulator, as well as an in-store archery range.

The Cedar Falls College Square Scheels closed its doors this week, not long after the store also closed its Waterloo Crossroads location.

But that doesn't mean the franchise has left the Cedar Valley. On March 2, a new, 100,000 square foot Scheels will open in Viking Plaza on the south end of Cedar Falls.

The location, next to Target and near the Cedar Falls Industrial Park, will more than double the size of the old Cedar Falls location.

According to Scheel's website, the new location will employ more than 150 people and will offer a fudge shop with Starbucks coffee, a Big Buck Hunter simulator, a ‘Photo-Op’ Booth, and a 5-sport simulator with sports including basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball and football, where customers can test their skills. There will also be a ‘try before you buy’ archery range.

Scheels, a sporting good chain, originally came to Cedar Falls in 1977 in the Blackhawk Mall. The College Square location opened in 1999.
