College Hill Farmers Market Kicks Off

Locally roasted coffee, homemade skirts, hand-dyed wool and fresh picked flowers were just a few of the offerings for sale at the inaugural College Hill Farmers Market Thursday.

Locally roasted coffee, homemade skirts, hand-dyed wool and fresh picked flowers were just a few of the offerings for sale at the inaugural College Hill Farmers Market Thursday.

Vendor Angela Wilson-Anderson, co-owner of Sista Skirts, a collection of handmade and up-cycled jewelry, clothes and accessories, said she was excited to be participating in a new Cedar Falls farmers market. Sista Skirts also has a weekly booth at the Saturday morning Cedar Falls farmers market next to Overman Park.

"We just thought this would be a good opportunity to be part of a local, community gathering," she said. "Anytime we have that opportunity, we take it."

More traditional farmer wares were also available. This reporter purchased green onions, radishes and asparagus from various vendors. Jam, maple syrup, fresh herbs, eggs, potted plants and popcorn were also available alongside the produce.

"I think this is great," said vendor Vicky Dunn, who runs C'est La V, a certified bakery, out of her Waterloo home. She showed off homemade pastries, bread and pizza dough to the steady stream of shoppers and passerby walking through the market. "It just seems like people want to be out. This is a lively neighborhood."

The market will run every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. through October. It is located in the parking lot next to the Octopus at the corner of College Street and 22nd Street.
