Police Seek Suspect in Hit-and-Run Incident After Driver Strikes Child

An 8-year-old boy was treated for injuries to his right leg and left arm after he was struck by a vehicle in Waterloo Monday. Police said the driver fled on foot.

Waterloo Police are seeking a man they said struck an 8-year-old boy with his car Monday before fleeing.

At about 7 p.m. Monday, police said the boy had been struck by a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am in the 2300 block of Lafayette Street in Waterloo.

The boy was taken to Covenant Medical Center and treated for injuries to his right leg and left arm.

Police said the vehicle was still at the accident scene, but according to witnesses, the driver left the scene of the accident on foot.

Police said the driver was identified as Justin Neil Varney, 31, of 1904 Sycamore Street, Waterloo. He has not been located.

Authorities said Varney also has a warrant for his arrest for Probation Violation.

Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Varney is asked to call the Waterloo Police Department at 319-291-2515 or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS (8477). Anyone with information leading to his arrest is eligible for a cash reward.
