Des Moines Plans To Bulldoze Former Monfort Plant

The property is slated to be redeveloped for a $70 municipal services center.

DES MOINES, IA — Demolition of the former Monfort meat-packing plant on the city's southeast side could cost $2.8 million. The City Council will vote today on a plan to raze the building at 1700 Maury St. to make way for a planned $70 municipal services center.

Monfort closed the plant abruptly in 1996, laying off more than 1,300 people. The property, which carried an assessed value of more than $4.69 million when it operated as a rendering facility, is now valued at $231,000, according to records from the Polk County Assessor's Office.

S&P Properties purchased the defunct meat-processing facility in 1999 from ConAgra Foods Inc. for $300,000. The company offered the 12-acre site to the city for $4.1 million, The Des Moines Register reported.
