Election Day: Des Moines To Choose Ward 3, At-Large Council Seats
Three people are running for the Ward 3 City Council seat; at-large race between two candidates.

DES MOINES, IA — Polls are open in Des Moines and voters have until 8 p.m. to cast their ballot in two City Council races. Both seats are contested.
One at-large seat is on the ballot. Candidates are incumbent Skip Moore, Des Moines' former municipal arborist who retired after nearly 35 years with the city forestry department, and challenger Connie Boesen, who spent 14 years on the Des Moines School Board.

The second race on the ballot will be decided by voters in Ward 3, where three candidates are seeking the seat being vacated by councilman Christine Hensley, who chose not to seek re-election after 24 years on the council.

Candidates for the Ward 3 seat are Josh Mandelbaum, who served as a policy adviser to former Gov. Tom Vilsack and currently currently works for the Environmental Law and Policy Center; Michael Kiernan, a small business owner and stay-at-home dad who formerly served on the city council five years; and Abshir Omar Mahamed, who has started a number of small businesses and is making his first bid for office in city government.
Candidates in the Ward 3 race raised more than $300,000, according to financial information filed last week with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board.
