Fatality Reported In Iowa Highway 5 Crash: UPDATED

An accident Monday morning killed one person and closed a portion of Iowa Highway 5 just south of Des Moines for more than three hours.

DES MOINES, IA — A portion of Iowa Highway 5 south of Des Moines was closed for more than three hours Monday morning following a two-vehicle crash that killed one person. The accident was reported around 7:45 a.m. on westbound Highway 5.

The highway was closed west of the U.S. Highway 65/69 interchange. KCCI-TV reported the driver of a pickup truck was heading eastbound on Highway 5 and crossed the median. The pickup was struck by a tanker truck belonging to the company Sweet Honey. The driver of the pickup was ejected from the vehicle and killed. The pickup was split in half.

A garbage truck became involved when the driver ran over some debris immediately following the crash, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The drivers of the tanker truck and garbage truck were not injured.
