Iowa Teen Who Killed Rapist Escapes Corrections Facility, Is Missing: Reports

DES MOINES, IA — An Iowa teen who was on probation for killing her rapist is missing after she escaped a corrections facility, according to reports.

Pieper Lewis, 18, was sentenced to five years' probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter, down from an initial charge of murder, in the death of 37-year-old Zachary Brooks, reports said.

Lewis left the Fresh Start Women’s Center shortly after 6 a.m. Friday, having cut off her electronic monitoring device, and remains missing, according to CNN, which reported a warrant is out for her arrest and officials have recommended her probation be revoked. She could now face as many as 20 years behind bars, the Des Moines Register reported.

Lewis has previously been cited for taking unapproved transportation while on probation, according to the Register. As part of her sentence, handed down in September, she was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution and serve hundreds of community service hours, the Register reported.

A GoFundMe raised over $560,000 for Lewis to pay for the restitution as well as the cost for her to attend college or start a business and expenses related to aiding other victims of sex crimes. The fundraiser received nearly 16,000 donations. The organizer of the campaign has since suspended donations.

At the time she killed Brooks, a 15-year-old Lewis had fled an abusive mother and was living with a 28-year-old man who sexually trafficked her to men, including Brooks, according to reports.
