One Person Dead After Early Morning Fire

A fire broke out before 5 a.m. at the Highland Park Plaza apartments on the city's north side.

DES MOINES, IA — An early morning fire at a north-side apartment complex killed one person and injured a second person, WHO-TV reported. The fire began around 5 a.m. Tuesday at the Highland Park Plaza apartments, 3717 Sixth Ave.

Flames were coming from a third-floor apartment when firefighters arrived, according to WHO. The building was evacuated and the fire, contained to one apartment, was extinguished quickly. Firefighters performed CPR on one person, who later died at a local hospital, according to WHO. Injuries to the second person were reportedly non-life-threatening.

DART buses were on the scene to provide warmth for those displaced from the city-owned building. The cause of the fire has not been reported.
