The City of Iowa City would like to remind residents of what to do regarding removal of snow from their property:

Media Release

The City of Iowa City would like to remind residents of what to do regarding removal of snow from their property:

SIDEWALKS
Property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall. The full width of the sidewalk (not just a path down the center) should be cleared. Residents who observe a sidewalk that has not been cleared within 24 hours may report the problem by calling 319/356-5152. Please be sure to note the address of the property, and be ready to provide that information.

CURB RAMPS AND CROSSWALKS
Snow and ice that is shoveled or that accumulates in crosswalks makes it difficult and dangerous for many of our residents, including children on their way to or from school, the elderly, or people in wheelchairs or who are mobility-impaired. When you get to the end of your sidewalk, please keep shoveling for an extra couple of feet to clear the crosswalks and curb ramps. This helps ensure that your neighbors and other pedestrians don't have to navigate or climb over piles of snow and ice when trying to cross the street at an intersection.

STORM DRAINS
If you have a storm drain located near your property, check to make sure it's not clogged withsnow. If you're able, shovel the snow away to keep the storm drains open. When the snowbegins to melt, an open storm drain will help move water away from parking lots and streets quickly, and also reduce the risk of having the melting snow refreeze when the temperatures drop at night. If you see a storm drain that is filled with snow, but are not able to clear it without placing yourself in danger, please contact the Streets Division at 319/356-5181 for assistance.

FIRE HYDRANTS AND WATER MAIN BREAKS
Deep snow can bury fire hydrants and make them hard to locate in an emergency. The situation can be compounded after snowplows clear the streets and residents shovel their sidewalks and driveways, piling snow even higher. If you have a fire hydrant located adjacent to your property, please clear the snow away two feet in each direction to allow the Fire and Water Departments easy access if it's needed. In case of an accident in which a fire hydrant has been hit by a vehicle, please call the Water Division at 319/356-5166, 24 hours a day. And finally, if you notice water running down the street, please contact the Water Division emergency number at 319/356-5166, 24 hours a day, as this may signify a water main break.
