Police: Iowa City Man Suggests Probation Officer 'Go Eat a Taco,' Violates Probation by Resisting Commands

The man has a long criminal history in the area, with a long line of misdemeanor offenses.

An Iowa City man found himself in jail yesterday after his unfriendly behavior toward a correctional officer led to him allegedly violating his probation.

According to a report written by a Johnson County parole officer, Jeffery Allen Clay, 52, of Iowa City, was allegedly unresponsive to initial commands during a probation home check at his apartment at 2018 Waterfront Drive on Friday.

The officer noted that although movement noises were audible within the residence, Clay refused to come to the door for 10 to 15 minutes. When he finally complied, Clay allegedly became verbally abusive toward the officer, suggesting that the officer should, "Go eat a taco." Clay then allegedly refused to remain seated during a room check, interfering with the officer's search efforts.

For this Clay was charged with violation of his probation and interference with official acts, serious misdemeanors. Clay has a lengthy criminal arrest record in the area, all misdemeanors, but his probation stems from multiple convictions for domestic abuse and violation of no-contact orders in 2011 and 2012, according to online court records.

Clay is currently in the Johnson County Jail on $7,500 cash-only bond.
