Iowa City Police: Man Threw Desk, Other Household Items at Physically Ill Wife

The man spoke with authorities afterward and said his wife's physical illness aggravates him and he agreed that counseling could perhaps do him some good.

An Iowa City man is accused of domestic abuse and child endangerment with no injury after his apparent frustration at dealing with his wife's physical illness boiled over into attacks Monday afternoon.

At 2:04 p.m. Monday afternoon police received a call about a domestic dispute at residence at the 600 block of Westgate Street in Iowa City. The caller was the wife of Alejandro L. Tanay, 37, of Iowa City, who told responding officers that Tanay had pushed her up against a dresser and threw household items at her, including a desk, according to the complaint.

The woman denied being injured, but said she had to push the couple's child out of the day to prevent injury due to the barrage of projectiles.

Tanay conceded upon being interviews by officers that he had lost his cool due to dealing with his wife's physical illness, but said he had been "helping" her throw items around the room, according to the complaint. He agreed with officer suggestions that counseling might be a beneficial option.

Tanay was charged with child endangerment with no injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, and domestic abuse assault, a simple misdemeanor. He was still being held in the Johnson County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
