Iowa City Police: Man Who Nearly Hit Squad Car Admitted to Having Consumed '15 to 20' Alcoholic Drinks Before Driving

An Iowa City police car was almost run into by a car driven by a man who told police he had a bit too much to drink before driving.


An Iowa City man was arrested this morning and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he nearly rear ended an Iowa City Police squad car.

According to an Iowa City Police complaint, a red truck allegedly driven by Tyler John Omann, 23, of Iowa City nearly ran into the back of Officer Brandon Faulkcon's squad car at the intersection of Washington and Gilbert Street. Omann then swerved onto the nearby curb and sidewalk in avoiding him.

Another officer then pursued Omann and arrested him, noticing visible impairment in Omann, according to the complaint, with Omann having red, blood-shot eyes, visible impairment, and smelling of alcoholic beverages. When asked by officers, Omann allegedly told them he had consumed "15 to 20 drinks" before driving, and that he was intoxicated.

Omann's blood-alcohol content was tested at .247 in .207 in two different tests. He was booked and released from the Johnson County Jail on an operating while intoxicated arrest, a serious misdemeanor, at 3:30 a.m. this morning.
