Possible Thunderstorms Tonight in Iowa City

Rain coats may be needed.

If you are going out tonight, you may want to grab your Gore-Tex, or at least an umbrella.

The National Weather Service is predicting possibly a thunderstorm tonight, as part of its hazardous weather outlook. The chance of rain is 40 percent this afternoon and increases to 90 percent tonight with total precipitation up to a half of an inch.

"We are getting into the spring season. This is when we start seeing thunderstorms," said David Sheets, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Davenport.

Sheets said severe storms are not expected, but there is a low probability of hail and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Further west in Southwest Iowa, Nebraska and Western Missouri, there is a greater probability of severe weather.

Wednesday could have a mix of rain and snow, but no accumulation, followed by a sunny Thursday with temperatures up to 49 degrees and a chance of more showers on Friday.
