Johnston's Senior Caring Hands Group Sends Angels To Newtown

The angels represent the 26 lives lost at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The Senior Caring Hands of Johnston are reaching across the country.

The needle craft group made and donated 26 specialty angels in memory of those killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The angels, which represent 20 children and six adults killed on Dec. 14, were sent to the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Newtown.

The delicate angels are also regularly made for the Johnston Mercy Hospice Center.

All angels are handmade by these Johnston seniors, blessed, and then taken to the hospice center where one is placed on the door of a patient who has passed, and then an angel is also given to each of the immediate family members.

Each time the angels are delivered, the nursing staff always comments on how grateful they are for what the Caring Hands group does and how much the families of the patients have expressed their thanks for receiving these blessed angels, said Caring Hands member Sue Timm.

Each month this group donates between 35 to 70 angels, she said.

Recently, they have begun asking local businesses and community members for  financial support because it costs approximately $600 a year for angel supplies.

If you would like to help them continue this heartfelt project, please send your donation to:
