PHOTOS: Middle School Show Choirs Perfect Performances Before Competition

The Johnston Middle School show choirs begin competition Friday and Saturday.

Months of rehearsals are coming to a head this weekend when Johnston Middle School singers take the stage in show choir competitions.

Both Johnston Middle School show choirs - Impact and Sound Advice - begin competition this weekend in Waukee. 

The students start rehearsing in mid-September and continue to develop their show throughout the season.

"Our students are involved in a large number of different activities which help to create an exciting environment for our show choirs," Laura Fog and Hannah Ryan, directors said in an email to Patch. "Our goal as their teachers is to not only teach students how to become well rounded musicians but to teach students about working together as a team."

Show choir is a different type of team, as there are 60 starters not just 5, so students learn to work together as a large team and know that there individual efforts make a difference. the directors said.

They also learn about work ethic and time management skills that help develop them into a well rounded individuals.

Friday Jan. 11    Waukee
Friday Jan. 18:   Johnston
Friday Feb. 8:    Urbandale
Friday Feb. 15    Pella

This year’s show includes, All of the Above, soloist: Will Kaptain; Waiting for a Star to Fall, soloist: Ellie Roquet & Maraena Black; Footprints in the Sand, soloists: Jared Peterson & Jillian Gabby; and Swing Medley, soloist: Donald Gee.

Friday      Feb 8th           Urbandale Invitational
Saturday    Feb 23rd          SE Polk Invitational

Choir selections are: "Stronger", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Someone to Fall Back On", "Runaway Baby", and "Alive!"

"We are extremely proud of our students and how they will represent the Johnston Music Department and the Johnston Community," Fog and Ryan said.
