Van Dee's Has Summer Treats and Eats

As the days bring in the heat, Van Dee's Ice Cream Shope has not only treats, but eats, for anyone hungry for more than just ice cream.

Van Dee's Ice Cream Shoppe is a fixture in Johnston, from its old-fashioned looking sign to ice cream sold by the pint.

But this spring brought a big change to the shop on Merle Hay Road: as of April 14 Van Dee's is under new management and offers more than ice cream.

Tina Gill, owner of Van Dee’s, said the cheeseburger is the shop'e most popular non-dessert item.

“The cheeseburger is really big,” Gill said.

Along with cheeseburgers, the menu offers hot dogs, tenderloins, beef burgers, chicken sandwiches and other sandwiches. Gill said the ice cream is still a big draw.

“We have different flavors of ice cream every week,” Gill said. “We have lemon, mango, pineapple. … German chocolate is this week’s flavor and next week’s flavor is praline.”

Gill said the Big Chippers and waffle cones are also favorites. Her personal favorite is the Heath Blitz.

Ice cream can be purchased by the quart or pint.

Gill said she has lived in Johnston for about seven years.

“Van Dee’s is a nice neighborhood business with a lot of nice people,” Gill said.
