KCCI reports that heavy snow is expected late Thursday afternoon, with totals between six and nine inches in central Iowa.

Late Thursday morning a band of moderate to heavy snow will develop and continue into Thursday evening, the National Weather Service is now predicting.

Strong winds and drifting snow Thursday afternoon are expected to make for a dangerous rush hour commute, the National Weather Service is reporting.

"Visibility of less than one quarter mile at times can be expected Thursday afternoon," the NWS reports. "Travel will become hazardous due to poor visibility and the roads rapidly becoming icy and snow packed."

The latest forecast spells a little bit of good news for the Thursday morning commute, but things might not be so easy on the way home. Or on Friday morning, for that matter.

Here's a peek at the storm's projected timeline and snowfall totals:

  • Snow will develop over central and southern Iowa by mid-afternoon Thursday. The heaviest snowfall will develop quickly once it does and last for about six hours before diminishing somewhat later Thursday night.
  • Light snow will persist into Friday before coming to an end later in the day. The snow may also mix with light freezing rain over southeast Iowa Thursday night, and a minor coating of ice on top of the snow is possible.
